Atonement Sandals
Provenance
Interpretation
While most non-functional objects served a symbolic purpose, these sandals are believed to have been worn as a form of atonement, probably in the context of a religious ritual. This is suggested by their strange and unwelcoming shape, likely intended to cause pain or discomfort. The holes on the upper part may have allowed for even more severe forms of punishment, through the insertion of spikes or burning sticks.
