Bird Cage

Bird Cage

Provenance
Interpretation

This box-like structure, with its finely woven frontal panel, is believed to have housed small songbirds. As bird species grew rarer across the Old Lands, keeping one at home must have been a privilege reserved for the few. The cursive inscription on the upper part may record the name of the bird, or perhaps of its keeper. The absence of any visible opening remains unexplained: some scholars suggest the cage was sealed after the death of its occupant, turning it into a memorial.
