Ceremonial Mirror
Provenance
Interpretation
The dark, polished surface at the center of this object - still faintly reflective despite the centuries - leaves little doubt as to its classification as a mirror. Its most puzzling feature, however, lies in the two brightly colored elements at its sides, which could be detached from the main body. Scholars believe these were held by two officiants during a rite, while a third figure - perhaps the devotee - gazed into the reflective surface. The numerous small protrusions covering the side elements served no discernible purpose and were most likely decorative.
